I think what's important to note here is that this is people's opinions. Not fact. Am I surprised to think that about half of Republicans might blame welfare? And where's the opposite suggestion: insufficient government welfare support to enable people to achieve independence?

While I don't think the framers had assault weapons in mind when writing the 2nd amendment, nothing in the wording says that militia membership is necessary to bear arms.
